Bath endured the heaviest storm damage in its history as Edna lashed the New England coast Saturday. Torrential rains and high winds flooded basements and stores, toppled trees, knocked out power and phones, and forced flood closures and emergency operations for hours.

Chief Frates ordered on duty all regular drivers and 15 to 18 call firemen at Central Fire Station as a severe storm raged. Four fire calls included downed wires at the Sedgwick hotel and Highland street, a blaze in Georgetown, and a fire at Mrs. Althea Heferon’s home on Five Islands road where a chimney fire caused extensive damage but the house was saved. Firefighters battled high water at Central station, used a booster tank and bucket lines, and moved stock from flooded shops.

Bath Maine suffered extensive rail damage Monday leaving no train service. Laureen Price, ticket agent, said limited service may resume Tuesday. Washouts along main and branch lines halted trains. 9 15 a.m. Saturday was the last departure and a 3 p.m. arrival was diverted to Portland due to a Hillside washout. Depot square flooded three to four feet deep. basement water reached four feet at times.

Hurricane Edna drenched Bath causing prolonged rain and gusty winds. Water surged from Center to Water and Vine streets flooding basements and stores including Gediman at 67 Center and Jack's Shoe Store. Sailors from Brunswick NAS Aid Surrounding Areas During Hurricane
Navy personnel from the Brunswick Naval Air Station worked through the night aiding Bath and Brunswick residents after Hurricane Edina. They manned generators for a polio patient, cleared roads, escorted emergency vehicles, patrolled flood channels, and kept the Bruns wick hospital powered. The Navy infirmary prepared for up to 200 casualties, and the Navy Emergency Ground Defense Force stood by. No mass injuries occurred.
