Bath honors first woman recruit in WAC induction
The Bath city hall hosted the first induction ceremony for a woman in the Women's Army Corps. Mrs Hilda Somes of 476 Middle Street took the oath from Lt. Helen L. Pease, with Pf Elizabeth Rich and Pvt Alice Donovan present. After basic training at Fort Oglethorpe she will join the Boston Port of Embarkation as a clerk typist, returning for a 10 day furlough. Mrs Somes has a son serving with the Seabees on Tinian Island.

Bath Superintendent Ladd to become deputy Maine education official

The Bath Iron Works yard launched the USS Drexler, a fast destroyer named for Ensign Henry Clay Drexler USN who sacrificed himself in 1924 aboard the USS Trenton. Drexler’s mother and family attended the ceremony as the ship slid from the ways on a clear late Summer day.

Three Men Hurt in Hyde Windlass Shed Collapse
Three workers were seriously injured when a portion of a coal storage shed collapsed at Hyde Windlass Co. on the wharf. W. Clyde Lake 53 Allen Moore 39 and Stephen Drottar suffered critical injuries with chest and spinal damage, broken neck and back. They were taken to Memorial hospital as officials probe the cause.

Sagadahoc Pomona grange met with Woolwich grange for an afternoon and evening session. About 200 attended and 41 new members from Sagadahoc county received the fifth degree, including 19 from Woolwich. The event featured a harvest supper, reports, and plans for September at Bowdoin Center. Proceeds from an auction supported the State Grange Educational Aid Fund.
