Great Debate Leaves Voters Lukewarm on Foreign Policy
The televised Maine Senate race debate between Republican Frederick G. Payne and Democrat Edmund S. Muskie drew a muted audience response. Viewers noted insufficient time for arguments, limited clash on the broad U.S. Foreign Policy topic, and a moderator seen as restraining intensity. Muskie offered idealistic views while Payne spoke from a factual Washington perspective.
