Georgetown residents gossip about engagements, trips, and plans as neighbors report on church events, social gatherings, and upcoming weddings. The column notes postponed lectures, visits to Bath and Arlington, and local raffish rumors amid community life.
The W C T U held a regular meeting at the Y M C A with Mrs Lelia Knight presiding. They voted to continue meetings at 2 30 p m and permanently at the Y M C A. Rev C W Harrison spoke on religion reform and local social moves including Bath Salvation Army and lodging rooms.
Resid ed in Bath Captain Charles John Carter of the Fannie C. Bowen perished with his mate when the schooner wrecked at sea on October 13. A Woolwich native aged 71, he planned retirement after this voyage and leaves a wife and four children, all known in Bath. His son Worrell serves in the U. S. Navy in Quincy, Massachusetts. Frederick lives in New York City. daughters Isabel and Marion reside in Yarmouth. He also leaves sister Mrs. Ed Day of Flushing, L I, and brother David Carter of Woolwich.
The two masted schooner Eliza Levenseller was reported lost after running ashore in thick weather on the southwestern Monhegan coast. The Boston to Rockland lightship vessel, built 1882 in Thomaston and 159 gross tons, had a five man crew who waded ashore. loss estimated at 3500 dollars. At Bath Aerie Fraternal Order of Eagles meeting four admission applications were received and a Thanksgiving Eve concert and ball was approved. arrangements formed by W F Ham William Lee Edward Lee Scott Morse T McCabe E T Whitehouse and F Glidden.
Weather and local life fill the page as residents report brown snakes sunning along roads and declining bird numbers. Cars bog down in mud on Parker Head road while Marsh family departs for New York and townsfolk visit Bath for Bob Ott Company shows.
Bids from New York Shipbuilding Fore River Shipbuilding William Cramp and Newport News meet for the largest navy craft order. Hull and machinery set at 11 500 000 per battleship with a 3 000 000 increase from last year.
The Y M C A reports gymnasium classes for ladies and girls began Thursday at ten o clock with the ladies class, while men and boys classes run daily. Delays in apparatus for physical exams delay final grading, with Mr. Cartmill to address it soon and possible schedule changes. The first Sunday meeting is Nov 5 led by the Loyal Men's class of the People's Baptist Church. A dormitory room is occupied and another reserved, leaving two vacancies.
In the Park League Monday evening the Athletics dropped the first string to the Swastikas by 15 pins and stormed back to win the second and third strings by strong margins. Smith had the high single with 100 and Boardman led with a total of 265, topping Cressey by two pins.
Independent photographer captures Gurnet Bridge joining Brunswick with Sebascodegan Island. Brunswick plans a new forty foot wide opening to slow the ebb current, improving passage between New Meadows and Casco Bay. A motor boat struggles against the strong flow as the tide races under the bridge.
Mrs George Blen and children of New York spent the summer at the Blen grandparents cottage then left for Boston to visit her parents and plans to join her London husband later. Mrs W S Harley and children of Candys Harbor visit relatives in town. A Grange social drew a large crowd with four piece orchestra, games, ice cream and cake. Seven dollars and fifty cents was raised for the fund. A new committee will run this Saturday. Leland Plummer came from Bath on Sunday. Ida Oliver of Medway visited her mother and sister Mrs T W Blaisdell, as did Dillie Oliver who traveled from Richmond due to Mrs Blaisdell's illness, now improved. A twelve pound son was born to Mr and Mrs Maurice Pinkham Saturday. J W Blaisdell, carpenter for Capt Proctor Hasan of Bath, was home for the weekend. Worthy Master J G Stevens and wife and James H Bodgemo were mentioned.
A four year old lad reports a girl trying to kiss him at the police ward room. Officer Rice directs the boy to hide around a corner to avoid the girl’s kiss, joking that she would die if she kissed him.
E C Bosworth of Gardiner reported to the inland fish and game department the shooting of a bald eagle at Swan Island in the Kennebec River. Foggy weather prevented him from seeing the shooters. The specimen was taken to the fish and game department and will be mounted by Curator James.
At Grace Church rectory Tuesday noon Lester W Hodgdon and Miss Helena S Higgins both of Westport wed in a ceremony by Rev Culbert McGay. The bride’s mother Mrs Solomon Higgins attended. couple will reside in Westport. Hodgdon is a leading town stone mason.
L. A. and W. conductors and motormen enjoyed a midnight chicken dinner after their trains were housed at the Dewey.
