Kennebec Indians once ruled Kennebec valley history
The Kennebis or Kennebec tribe led by Bashaba on Swan Island held a fortified seat. The river bore several tribal names from Sagadahoc to Caratunk as settlements spread. Sebastian Rasle describes their dress, tools, and customs, while early settlers encroached and their villages were driven from the valley by 1724.
