Bath 1882 A look at Sunday closing and town life
Forty years ago in Bath a November column notes Front Street dealers pushing Sunday closing, a horse causing chaos on Center Street, and local social events. It mentions shipyard activity, measles at the Orphans Home, a court session, a Mephistophelian mix of illness and luck, new vessels on the wharves, and plans for a claw mill in Woolwich. The town’s bustle includes ice ponds, rail alignment, and civic notices as well as Christmas tree trade and a baby clinic initiative.

Siberian taigas seen as world’s largest forest belt
A forestry meeting debates the world’s largest forests with candidates from North America and the Amazon, but a speaker highlights Siberia’s vast taiga from the Obi to the Indigirka. The conifer-dominated belt spans about 1700 miles wide and 4600 miles long, with dense trees hindering travel and erasing sense of direction.

Helium Gains Ground as Safer Dirigible Filler
Navy pilots say helium filled bags are steadier in air and less dangerous than hydrogen. The Fort Worth Texas plant, the world’s only helium facility, is ramping to full capacity and aims for ten cents per cubic foot. It has stored about 2,000,000 cubic feet and produces 15,000 cubic feet daily, with 200 workers under Commander Olsen. Congress may fund broader helium recovery, with production expanding after January 1.
