SINKING FILL AT COD COVE BAY BAYSIDE DELAY FOR MAINE BRIDGE PROJECT
In Maine a fill at Cod Cove Bay sinks and this bottomless mud challenge delays a highway bridge and road work. Contractor Hughes, using a large crew and steam shovels, reports rising material moves and uncertain depth while workers endure harsh winter digs and logistical hurdles. The project, begun in spring 1924, tests engineering plans and funding as bulges form and terrain shifts, threatening completion on the east bank then west, with the state weighing costs and timing.

Papers and Toys in the Old Days Not Often Seen
Rev O W Folsom recalls mid nineteenth century life noting the surge of daily papers and periodicals, farm families relying on weekly editions, and the Atlantic Monthly shaping literary taste. He contrasts childhood then with today’s vast toy industry and girls dolls with outfits, plus boys erector sets and trains, ending with a teaser about continued discussion on Page Seven.

Island Belle sinks from fame to ruins in Casco Bay
A ruined Island Belle, once the Boothbay fleet queen, lies at Back Day Portland harbor stripped of metal and gear. Once the largest steamer between Bath and Boothbay Harbor, it carried 4000 passengers and faced repeated mishaps before being towed away and left to rot as marine growth and theft consume its timbers and hull. Dr. Donald MacMillan reports Eskimos as bright, communal, and adaptable, debunking myths about their ice age life. The article contrasts the shipwreck with vivid ethnographic notes on Polar Eskimo life and social structure.
