The long Maine winter brings heavy snow and shifting moods while residents face scarce drinking water and distant supply lines. Local events include church talks, lumber shipments, mail route petitions, deer sightings, and community updates from Phippsburg and nearby Bath.
The People's Ferry Company of Bath and Woolwich asks the state auditor to appropriate 3000 dollars yearly for 1917 and 1918 to cover extraordinary repairs and new slips. The Bath city owners hold three quarters of the stock, with Woolwich owning the rest. The boat Hockomock serves Bath to Woolwich and has run later hours in summer with state aid since 1913. The company estimates deficits in 1915 and plans a longer night service and earlier start and later finish, six months instead of four. May incur 8000 dollar slip upgrades and engine work.
Rev Edward D Johnson rector of St Paul s Episcopal Church Brunswick announces to the congregation his resignation to accept a call as rector of St Anne s Church Annapolis Maryland. Johnson has served Brunswick since 1912 and earlier from 1901 to 1906 and also had duties at Lisbon Falls and Richmond. A Maine diocese official and National Guard chaplain, he held several community positions. A Masonic instruction session is set for Waterville on December 19 at 2 p m for Royal Arch Masons in good standing.
A Bath meeting between Ministers' Association and Chamber of Commerce proposed hosting a January Maine youth conference. E W Hyde and W A MacCormick to pick a committee to arrange travel and lodging for about 300 high school and academy delegates. Dates likely January 19 20 21 with speakers from outside the state focusing on work for boys.
Rupert H. Baxter announces 1917 appointments for the Bath Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Finance Committee chaired by J. Edward Drake includes John A. Morse Frank B. Nichols William S. Newell R. H. Baxter. Nominating Committee chaired by Arthur K. Purington includes Fred P. Shaw Elliot Fuller John N. Taylor Harry W. Crosman. Court of Honor names John McInnes Edward W. Hyde Wilbur C. Oliver Roscoe P. Ham. Camp Recommendation Committee led by Edward W. Hyde includes Leland R. Mitchell Fred P. Shaw J. A. Redlon John McInnes. Publicity Committee includes Frank B. Nichols and Arthur K. Purington.
The annual nationwide Red Cross seal sale starts December 1 to fund tuberculosis work. Over 300 million seals have been distributed. every state and many towns compete to sell most per capita. Prizes include pennants and honor certificates. Hershey Pennsylvania led last year with 29.04 seals per capita. Rhode Island led states with 2.29 per capita.
Miss Amy Dority of Lisbon Falls and Claude Fifield of Bath wed in Portland on Tuesday and plan a Boston wedding trip. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Dority, is a Lisbon Falls High School graduate and former Brunswick freight office worker. The groom is in the Bath Electric Company express division.
The town measured all roads as required by state law. First Selectman Will Berry completed the task, recording results with Town Clerk Harold Hunt. There are exactly thirty three miles of town roads on our island.
Daniel Bishop buys wood lots in Dresden Woolwich and Phippsburg and plans a winter cut of more than 450000 feet of lumber. He has bought 200000 feet to stock a new South End lumber yard and expects an 80000 foot shipment next week. He arranges lumber in all dimensions.
