Bath Teachers Discuss Salaries In Maine Meeting
Eighty six teachers and administrators met at Bath Junior High for a five hour conference on Salaries and Salary Scheduling. John Starie of the National Education Association cited Maine’s 1955 average salary of 2975 dollars versus a national 4100, noting Maine’s lower pay compared with several states. Results show 10 percent of Maine teachers left the state last year and some districts raised average salaries 500 to 600 dollars, though the rise is not statewide. Local officers from Sagadahoc and Lincoln counties attended, with Miss Helen Hayes organizing.
