The Independent reports a movement in parts of the county to block the planned bridge across Merrymeeting Bay next season. Despite a Labor Day special election approving state aid, towns may resist funding, arguing the law is permissive and not compulsory. Opponents plan to press for March town meetings to prevent appropriations, while supporters warn state funds could be lost if local funds fail.
Citizens split on a proposed bridge toll system with supporters citing benefits to the district while opponents warn of costs. A third faction argues that a toll bridge is worse than none, making the coming months pivotal for the plan.
