Retired Federal Judge John A. Peters of Ellsworth presides as the government seeks damages related to events in 1939 involving the former lighthouse tender. The case centers on historic maritime actions and their long term legal implications.
The Morgan Yacht Corsair sails up and down the Pacific Coast toward Mexico. The craft follows a route from Vancouver along the famous inside passage to the North as part of a measure-seekers voyage.
On Oct 15 Bath introduced parking meters with a four week trial. Six meters were installed with two in a trial period and four weeks paid for. Since Oct 15 the system has collected $12,054. The meters have not furnished any tool during the trial.
Charles B. Doyle presided as Minot hosts a Rotary meeting with guest Chief, who praised the FBI as the world’s foremost law enforcement agency under J Edgar Hoover. He described FBI duties against espionage networks, noting cooperation with naval, war intelligence, police, and even public schools, and said Long Island had no act in touch with Hamburg Nazi stations.
The YS Elks Club outlines a Friday meeting to finalize plans for a football charity drive supporting the Hyde Memorial Home and Christmas packages for veterans. Funds from games against Maine colleges and other teams will fund the project with prizes and turkeys for attendees.
The Supreme Board met in the afternoon for business with Mrs. Della Ports and Mrs. Portland in roles of Right Lady and porter. Attendees included Belle Whitish, Blanche Simpson, and Miss Phyllis. Myrtle lodge provided dinner between sessions. decorations featured yellow chrysanthemums and purple ribbon.
Henry O. Trowbridge of 888 Middle Street received a top award from the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. With Ralph F. Symonds, he read a paper on Beam Trawling in the North Atlantic in Boston in January. The paper won the society’s best paper award for 1947, earning both men certificates. Trowbridge, long at Bath Iron Works as Chief Engineer, helped design 18 beam trawlers before Dec 31, 1946. He was named general representative for Bureau Veritas in Paris.
The Bath Memorial hospital marks four decades as a community created and sustained facility. It details the hospital’s growth from a six bed founding in 1909 to current capacity, the endowment growth to about $600,000, rising costs, and the ongoing need for broad local funding to cover operating deficits.
