Sawdust as Cattle Food Tested by Madison Lab

The Forest Products Laboratory at Madison Wisconsin found that sawdust treated with diluted sulfuric acid and neutralized with lime yields a bran like cattle feed. After processing the lime and acid are removed leaving a soft feed rich in sugars and about 15 percent water. Three cows fed the modified wood gained fat and milk, prompting the Agriculture Department to test the method with several hundred cattle nationwide to confirm the Madison results. Immense sawdust waste could be converted into a cheap cattle feed, creating a large potential market.
