Woolwich Highway Project Paused Over Steel Shortage
Construction on the Route One improvement in Woolwich is temporarily suspended due to lack of steel for bridge spans. David H. Stevens, chairman of the State Highway Commission, announced plans to build a new approach to the Bath end of the Bath Woolwich bridge, subject to Federal Bureau of Public Roads approval. The two lane highway, 4.5 miles, awaits steel. Stevens projected opening to traffic in Fall 1957 and noted a proposed one million dollar overpass. The Bath-Woolwich bridge, the Carlton bridge, would be widened by removing the south sidewalk to widen the roadbed. Reports on the commission budget and a sufficiency survey were also discussed at the Rockland meeting.
