Lieut Com Yates Dies in Brooklyn After Heroic Acts
Lieut Com Alexander Fred Hammond Yates U S N retired 50 died Jan 4 in Brooklyn after 30 years of ill health from Cuban and Philippine service and shock from an explosion in Monterey Harbor where he rescued many lives. He helped build the Chester at Bath Iron Works and spent summers at Linekin Bay. Born Round Pond Jan 11 1879 he served ten years at sea and lived in Brooklyn after retirement. Survived by wife Katherine mother Mrs Emma Yates of Waterville uncle George K Conery and aunt Mrs Connery of Portland burial in Waterville family plot.

The Morse high school will feature a top modern heating plant from Fels Co of Portland with Bi Anderson in charge. Three American water tube boilers will be installed, two in operation and one as emergency boiler. Over 100 radiators and 25 univents will circulate heat, all thermostat controlled for even temperatures. Harry A. Walters of Bath visited Portland for the automobile show.

Veteran river pilot Captain Frank Dingley dies at 73
Captain Frank Dingley a renowned Kennebec river pilot died Tuesday morning after a ten day illness. The Bath area figure commanded towboats on the Kennebec and aided government agencies with boat movements each spring. He was born in Hallowell and later served as a director of local maritime interests and as commander of vessels for Bath Iron Works. Funeral set for Thursday at 2:30 PM at the Old Folks Home.

Cattle dealer Mr. Sprague of Tops ham was in the area on business last week. The Christian Endeavor social at Mrs. Lucy Baker’s home was held after a postponement due to illness. Clifford McNally of Brunswick started work Monday with Mr. Litchfield. A fire destroyed a tractor owned by Harry Walker and part of Joseph Billodeau’s mill on the wood lot last week. the cause is unknown. A new tractor has been purchased and the mill is running again.

Grateful residents credit Conley with saving a life and praise Mayor Charles H. Cahill for securing Carnegie commission recognition.
