Potatoes sell 40 to 60 cents a bushel and loose hay fetches 11 to 14 dollars a ton as farms face car shortages. The Baxter Paper Box factory on Broad Street seeks ten additional girls as 54 are already employed. Supervisor Miss Winnie Durgin will train newcomers quickly. the well lit, ventilated plant offers good pay and pleasant work. A reporter saw workers assembling a 10000 unit sliding box for an urgent order, with another large order from Mary Garden Perfumery Co. to follow.
Captain Erwin J. Wallace of Small Point reached Bath yesterday after towing a piano and cargo in a launch. An engine breakdown caused drifting toward Popham Beach, where life saving crew rescued him using a power lifeboat. He was towed to Popham for repairs amid rough seas.
Five caskets with Malaga Island Colony remains were moved to Pownal for interment. The island cemetery was dismantled under State oversight, with former residents housed or found homes.
The three master schooner Nat Meader with coal for Augusta arrived yesterday from Port Richmond. Captain Barter used wind and tide to bring the vessel to the city under canvas and anchor off the Boston boat wharf. It is the second up Kennebec voyage this summer. The Henrietta Simmons and Mary E. Olys also reached the river mouth bound for upriver.
Society notes report about twenty five Fortnightly Club members attending a Grace Church session to consider admitting new members at a higher fee. Fall enrollment allowed for local and away teachers, with an added luncheon by Elizabeth Wadsworth chapter DA R in Portland.
