Business analyst J A Livingston calls the slump in auto sales the darkest spot in the economy and sees its ripple effects across steel and other industries. He notes that income remains relatively high, savings grow, and bond sales rise while the car market shifts toward smaller, cheaper models and longer car lifespans. The auto giants weigh strategies as observers warn that higher priced models may decline and consumers seek value, with Rambler showing some gains. The industry hopes a timely shift in policy and consumer demand will lift the downturn.
