Memorial Day will close City Chat and Bath stores. Insect pests injure oaks at Oak Grove cemetery. Linden Street sidewalk project and new river pier work are planned. Bath Yacht sailors plan Memorial Day at Swan Island and the ferry route.
A profile of James Lawrence McQuarrie born 1867 in Bath Maine. He joined the Bell Telephone Company of Maine in 1882 rising from night operator to chief assistant engineer and then to management in Boston Chicago and New York. With fifty five patents to his credit he helped develop common battery equipment and the first Cincinnati battery multiple switchboard at Worcester in 1896. He married, plays golf, and embodies a long steady career described as a grind with technical ingenuity.
Bath resident and Jamaica Plain shoe maker Thomas G. Plant sent a $100 check to Scott R. Frye to aid improvements at the town athletic field. The contribution aims to enhance facilities for boys and young men who use the field, with some residents urging it be named the Thomas G. Plant Athletic Field.
The yacht Pantooset, built at Bath Iron Works for Boston magnate A. S. Bigelow, arrives in port flying the Cuban Republic flag and renamed Hateuy. She will undergo months of overhaul at Bath with officers and crew making the city their headquarters during repairs after a foggy New York harbor salute.
In Rockland a dense fog accident left the steamer James T. Morse sinking at its pier after a ram by the Belfast. Passengers and crew escaped ashore with narrow margins. The Belfast suffered little damage. Unclear if the Morse will be repaired in Camden or East Boston. Two Wild West shows cancel Bath dates due to field issues and other reasons.
Charles W. Morse was hospitalized at the government prison in Atlanta yesterday. He is reported to suffer a kidney trouble worsening his health. Mrs. Morse is selling valuable art and bric-a-brac to fund her ongoing efforts for his release.
