In Washington Street, Mrs. Chas. W. Taylor preserves three antique chairs claimed to have belonged to Marie Antoinette. One arm chair bears a back inscription recounting Captain Samuel Clough’s attempt to rescue the queen, linking the items to Westport and the voyage of the Sally. Other pieces traveled through Wiscasset and Gardiner connections to Maine families, sharing a storied path from France through the Clough descendants to Portland’s J. P. Baxter.
President Taft refused clemency for banker Charles W. Morse and for John R. Walsh. Morse, in Atlanta penitentiary since January 1910, must serve. Walsh in Leavenworth since 1910 may seek parole next September. Morse may renew his plea after January 1, 1913 with release possible in 1915.
At Cathance Maine Central station a box slit for freight way bills houses a bird that built a nest and laid four blue eggs. The agent, initially doubtful, was told by Portland officials not to disturb the nest, so the bird remains and a brood of young is expected.
Next Tuesday the 55 foot cabin cruiser Topaz IV will be launched for Commodore Charles W. Clifford Jr of the Kennebec Yacht Club from the builder’s yard at Wiscasset. A Portland party will attend and Miss Martha Eastman will christen the craft with champagne as she strikes the water.
This week the engagement of Miss Elizabeth Minose of Phippsburg Center to Rev Charles L Stevens pastor of the Congregational church at the Center was announced. Miss Minott announced the engagement when she entertained her club the Busybodies at her home last Wednesday. Both boat owners complain that down river fishermen monopolize the landing floats at City landing and give others little chance to make a landing there.
Historian H C Thayer doubts the claim that a Parker was the mate of the Mayflower. He argues the Sagadahoc settler John Parker is not proven as the ship's mate, discusses possible later service, and questions the identity of various John Parkers listed in Sagadahoc and Saco records.
The Nahanada, an enduring island steamship, is praised for safety speed and graceful lines as travelers head to vacation regions. The line plans two new steamers this year to help with summer business, but the Nahanada’s popularity is unlikely to wane after years of service.
