Superintendent Speaks on State School for Boys in Health Council

William H. Hughes, recently named superintendent of the State School for Boys at South Portland, outlined conditions and work at the school during a May 17 Health Council meeting. He noted 105 boys, including 45 aged 15 to 19 in one cottage, and stressed teaching good working and playing habits. The cottage system uses parents as role models, with education aimed at head heart and hand. The facility offers hobbies, arts and crafts, and saleable projects, plus a farm with cows, hens, pigs, and a large garden. Home visits help reintegrate boys into family life. The school lacks a gym and a regular church, though work is underway to convert a library into a chapel. The meeting also saw nominations for officers for the next session.
