Gifts were given to Mrs. Carey and Mrs. Hill, retiring president, and the group dined at Hotel Sedgwick with bouquets and rose buds at each place, later delivered to confined members.

Mrs Walter S Glidden and Mrs Arthur K Purington hosted Les Camarades Musicaux at Miss Alice N Magoun’s home on Middle Street. Allan H Ramsay presented The Impressario with a program of piano duos trios solos and duets featuring Miss Magoun Mrs Albee Mrs Hersom Mr Ramsay and others.
Bath's fire department was active with multiple grass and woods fires across the weekend. Incidents included a brush fire at 367 Middle Street involving Guy Sprague, a rear yard grass fire at 167 Middle Street occupied by Mrs Sterling Burgess, and fires on Oliver Street property of Senator Arthur G Spear. Additional woods fires near North Bath at Galen Ward's property required booster tank and auxiliary pump use. Four alarms occurred Saturday plus Sunday incidents at Murphy's Corner in Woolwich and other Middle Street sites.
Bath dominates two weeks of Sagadahoc Registry deeds with a third of entries. Names include Arrowsic Otty Steen and Evelyn Ater. Catherine Burgess and Joseph Burgess on Court Street. Irene Denham and James Hughes on High Street. Winnie McCrater and Chester McCrater on Maxwell Street. many other transfers across Bowdoin Phippsburg Richmond and Topsham involving land and buildings on various streets.
Miss Marjorie Thaxter of Portland and granddaughter of Mrs. Frederick H. Kimball of High street was chosen to represent the class of 1943 on Smith College’s Judicial Board. She was also elected fire captain of her house for the coming year after preparing at Waynflete School.
Lynn W. Richardson of Richmond had a manslaughter count dismissed in Brunswick municipal court after an all day hearing regarding the fatal injuries suffered by Otis L. Pero Jr. of Bath. Richardson was found guilty of leaving the scene without identifying himself and fined $25 plus costs, with a $200 surety bond on appeal. The case centered on a Bath Brunswick highway incident near Cook's Corner.
The Police department will sponsor its third annual Policeman's Ball on May 24 or 31 at the State Armoury on the Brunswick road. City Messenger C. Leroy Hutchins heads the committee as police invite heads of departments from Brunswick Portland South Portland Lewiston and other Maine towns. The event features a grand march led by Mayor and Mrs. Robert H. Haskell and plans include an invited orchestra and dance programs for patrons.
Roland Smith post will host a testimonial banquet for Morse High School basketball team of last winter on May 8 at Legion hall. Coach Madden, assistant Farrell, Athletic Director Small, and the varsity squad will attend along with Legionnaires. Moving pictures will follow the dinner as Eugene Desmond chairs the committee.
Miss Mildred Furbush Democrat Ky recently spoke at Corliss Street church about her mountain work with Miss Hoilsmuth. They travel on one horse to relieve suffering in seven public schools, nursing, funerals, organizing clubs and teaching the Bible. Feuds make conditions dangerous yet the effort aids many needy and orphans as local women pack yearly clothing for distribution.
A Maine effort to form a State of Maine Post for the Society of American Military Engineers lists Archibald M. Main of Bath Iron Works as president and Everett Pierce as first vice president. Port Captain William Blair and Thatcher B. Pinkham hold key posts as vice president and secretary respectively, with Naval Inspectors and a Marine Reserve officer as aides. The group aims for a charter and a mid June meeting, expecting 50 to 100 members by then.
Independent Retail Oil Dealers of Maine appointed R. E. Nowell of Bath to the executive committee to represent Sagadahoc Knox Lincoln and Waldo counties. B. F. Stone of Skowhegan chairs the committee representing Franklin Somerset and Kennebec counties. H. W. Morse of Portland treasurer representing York and Cumberland counties. Other representatives include Fred C. McKenney Lewiston Androscoggin and Oxford Fred Peterson Fort Fairfield Aroostook M. Butterfield Dexter Penobscot and Piscataquis A. E. Getchell Bar Harbor Washington and Hancock. H. A. Saunders of Portland is field secretary.
About 300 seniors attended Morse high school's class of 1940 prom Friday in the gym. Watie Akin and his band played from eight to midnight, with the gym decked in green and yellow and refreshments served at intermission. Attendees included Principal Horace P. Herrick and several faculty and community members as well as thanks to Robert Earle for helping secure the orchestra.
The Masque and Gown presents The Petrified Forest by Robert Sherwood Thursday and Friday at 8 15 in Memorial hall. Tickets at the door. A memorial service for Prof Charles C Hutchins will be held Sunday May 26 at five in the college chapel. Walker Art gallery features photographs by Bowdoin Camera club. Sub Freshman weekend begins Friday May 3.
Major Holmes of Bath Battery announces 1st Lieutenant Joseph A. Butler as acting captain of Battery D 240th C A C until further notice. 2nd Lieutenant John E. Madden becomes acting first lieutenant and Leslie J. Ross of Central Grammar School takes Madden’s duties as 2nd lieutenant. Butler had served as acting captain since Capt Elver A Stickney’s resignation. Permanent appointments expected in a few weeks.
Grace Church Men's club hosted a Ladies' Night last week marking season’s end. Edward Sewall spoke briefly before introducing magician Justin Wayne who performed to strong audience laughter. Refreshments followed as the group planned to resume in the Fall. Edwin 3rd of Wyman Dam visited with Mrs. Pinson’s parents and returned home with Mr. and Mrs. Soule after a weekend at Wyman Dam.
George Nelforh Weston Jr of Damariscotta completed a 16 week Class A Group IT Clerical School program at Norfolk and Newport. He graduated with highest honors and was praised by his Commanding Officer for energy reliability and potential a successful Navy career.
A Bath nature group presents mosses and lichens collected locally in the library’s main reading room. A tray of eight moss varieties is arranged by Mrs. Herbert R Lemont, with other displays arranged by Mrs. William L. Skelton and Mrs. R. J. M. Steussy.
Republican women will meet Thursday afternoon May 2 in Bath to plan an energetic county campaign. The gathering starts at 2 30 in the common council room of the municipal building with possible adjournment to the auditorium. Miss Bessie E Dickinson of Bath will open the meeting.
Franklin Sprague of Brunswick, an outside machinist, suffered a sprained knee at Bath Iron Works and is hospitalized at Memorial hospital for a day or two.
Opera star Gladys Swarthout will headline the Bath and Brunswick Community Concert Association season opener on October 22, announced by Prof. Frederic Tillots. The program also features the Trapp Family Choir from Hungary and a final artist to be announced. Mrs. Fred D. Hill and Mrs. Carlton Young attended the meeting. deferred payment plans return with ticket info via Mrs. Hill.
Bath Teachers club sponsored a card party at Morse high school gymnasium with 44 tables and about 50 dollars net for a graduating class scholarship. Prizes went to Mr. and Mrs. John Parker for contract and Mrs. Willard McLean with Ralph O. Burden for auction. table and refreshment committees and several Junior Cosmopolitan club members assisted. Local merchants donated prizes and Winter Street church loaned tables.
Variety Shops Inc. workers from the Waterville Augusta area joined colleagues for an evening of sociability at the Green Lantern Inn. The event included a business session, a meal by Mrs. Miles, entertainment, and dancing with more than 50 employees and spouses attending.
Central church Ladies' Aid celebrated the president Miss Margaret R Foote's birthday at a regular meeting with cake and tea. They discussed plans for a rummage sale on May 4 at 2 p.m. in the parish House.
Judge Gardiner R. Deering is named president with Fred H. Lord as vice president and Alexander MacDonald as treasurer at the final meeting of the Central Church Men's Club. The group plans a July clambake in Larrabee's grove on the New Meadows.
Mrs Henry O Trowbridge, a patient at Memorial hospital, was discharged Saturday evening and returned to her home at 13 Andrews road.
