Merchants Clarke and Lake Built Maine Trading Empire

The document recalls Clarke and Lake as early settlers and capitalists in Sagadahoc and Kennebec valleys. They acquired Arrowsic Island in 1654, Nequasset and Parker's Island lands, plus further tracts, establishing forts, mills, trading houses, and ships. Their fort on Arrowsic served as a regional hub, employing many and shaping law and order, though later British politics endangered heirs’ lands and rights.
