The Kennebec dips and dimpled shores contrast with persistent snow as March nears its end. Local items report naval snippets from Mediterranean to Azores, a near-sinking warning from a submarine, social news from Bowker farm to Brunswick visits, and ongoing winter weather affecting travel and church attendance.
At a Monday meeting the Kennebec Yacht Club directed Secretary Purington to notify Capt. W. R. Rush that the club’s services are at the government’s command. Members plan to enroll boats 40 feet and over in the Naval Coast Defense Reserve and to locate suitable vessels elsewhere if needed.
The three masted Northern No 7 for Northern Transportation Co. of Wilmington launched from Kelley Spears Co. yard with flags and no christening. Built for coastwise coal trade, it carries 3000 tons, measured 245.5 by 41.2 by 19.9 feet, with 1631.29 gross tons. Captain H A Gregory to command. maiden voyage to Newport News via Boston.
The body of Frederick H. Gowell, drowned Jan 3 in the Maine Central ferry slip, was found Tuesday in the Gibbons Coal Co. wharf area by James Roderick. Identified by clothing items, the body was removed to the undertaker after viewing by the medical examiner who deemed no inquest needed. Gowell, a 25 year veteran engineer on the ferry boat, fell between the slip and the boat. Funeral set for 2 pm Thursday from 647 Washington St. Local notes: Joseph L. Aaron of Calgary left town after a brief visit. police got Red Cross chest plasters from Webber's drug store.
The Woolwich Part ridge Cemetery Association met Saturday at D. W. Blair’s home with G. M. Stinson presiding and Mrs. Rachel Gilmore as secretary. Reports were read and accepted. officers from last year were re elected and the treasurer Alice G. Stinson reported a permanent fund of 577 14 and 620 74 at year end plus 69 58 from cash and other receipts. Auditor Mrs. Lillie M. Blair certified the balance as correct. An adjourned town meeting followed Monday at the town house with 10 o clock start. Wilson Bailey acted as moderator and J. E. Fullerton as clerk. selectmen Eben Dana Frank S. Head and Edgar Bailey. collector and treasurer Albert Hathorne to be appointed.
