Oldest Town House Burns Protects Furnishings

The John McFidden house, over 140 years old and possibly the town’s oldest, was destroyed by fire Friday afternoon. Firefighters from Robinhood battled the blaze with limited success, saving most first floor furniture and limiting damage to the dwelling. Mrs. Ferris Leonard, heir to the property, was in Bath visiting relatives. Mr. Leonard alone remained at home when the fire started. The large, imposing dwelling stood in a prominent location and drew attention as it burned.
