Chesley Hutchins 83 former Percy and Small shipyard and Bath Iron Works employee died at his Bath home 9 Goddard Street early Tuesday. Born March 27 1867 in Boothbay he worked at sea and later after marriage moved to Bath 57 years ago. Survived by widow Gertrude Stover Hutchins a daughter Mrs William A Small Bath two sons Ralph F and Raymond P Bath six grandchildren four great grandchildren and other relatives. Funeral Thursday at Curtis Funeral Home Bath with Rev Frederick Moffatt officiating burial at Oak Grove in spring.
Mrs Merton Wright of Sasa noa Bluff learned Saturday of the sudden death of her brother in law Pierce G Clinger 58 of Milton Pa The longtime engineer with a Milton novelty firm served as a Scout Master and was highly respected His widow Louise Larrabee Wright two stepdaughters Evelyn Wright and Dorothy Wright Norden Hanover and one grandson Roger Neilson survive He was a Penn University student in Philadelphia Funeral services were held Tuesday
Everett G. Lemont funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock from Arthur F. Mayo & Son Funeral Residence on High Street. Rev. Howard F. Cramer, pastor of Beacon Street Methodist Church, officiated. Bearers included Harold Haggett, Charles Haggett, Bazin Lemont, Paul Lemont, Ralph Card and Richard Card. Entombment postponed until spring in Oak Grove family lot.
Funeral services for Samuel M. Jordan were held Wednesday at 2 from the A. F. Mayo & Son funeral residence with Rev. Richard J. Schaper of Winter Street Congregational Church officiating. Bearers were Hobart Ames Harry White Stanley Hutchins Robert Gallagher Earl Morse and Allen Little. He was entombed in the family lot at Oak Grove.
Funeral services for Samuel M Crocker were conducted Tuesday at the A. F. Mayo & Son residence with Rev. Charles R. Sims of the First Baptist church officiating. Bearers were George Crocker Richard Crocker Ralph Baker and John Osborne. He was entombed for burial in Laurel cemetery, Woolwich.
Funeral services for Mrs. Carrie Trufant Hodgkins were conducted Saturday at two o'clock from Curtis Funeral Home. Rev. Richard J. Schaper officiated. The body was entombed until spring for burial in Oak Grove family lot.
Sparks pouring from a chimney at the Wilson block on Front Street near Broad caused a false alarm at Box 42 Monday night. Firemen found no chimney fire. flames were from rubbish burned in the basement furnace. All clear sounded at 10 36.
Mrs Mary Gallant and Mrs Frank Lehane died Monday in Kittery while visiting Mrs Asher Da mou. The obituary notes their connection to local families and the village community.
The second heavy snowstorm of winter hit Thursday evening bringing eight inches of snow and drifting. Bath Police report one casualty Sarah Pratt 47 fell on a slippery hill and may have a broken hip. X rays planned Friday at Memorial hospital after she was taken there.

Appropriations reach 100000 plus 895 with 8000 more for common schools and 3000 for the high school. A planned 1500 toward Brunswick recreation center sparked debate. Merwin A. Delano pleaded guilty to operating an unregistered vehicle and paid a $4.70 fine plus costs in Bath municipal court before Court Recorder John W. Quarrington. State Trooper Ray Orcutt was the complainant. Five Richmond juveniles faced malicious mischief charges for mailbox damage. their cases were not pressed and they received stern lectures. A sixth Richmond juvenile charged with breaking and entering was given an indefinite sentence in the State Reformatory.
Palm Beach veteran Capt. Frederick Christian Voss born 1865 in Bath marked his 86th birthday on February 28 in Hypoluxo Florida. A South Florida boating pioneer since 1888 he steered the Lake Worth steamer and ran early Palm Beach Miami charter boats. His 68 foot houseboat Donny Gill linked Port Washington and Palm Beach. two sons work in Fort Lauderdale charter trade and marine science.
Mrs Norman Adams of Andrews Road died Tuesday in Portland. She was a longtime resident and is survived by relatives in the area. Funeral arrangements were not available at press time.

At Sagadahoc Pomona Grange meeting the lecturer led a discussion on whether deep freezers reduce family food costs and if keeping goats is worthwhile. The group agreed deep freezes save foods, while opinions on goats were divided. A 70th anniversary event for Pomona Grange is planned for April 6 at West Bath grange hall, marking the 1881 founding. Approximately 100 attended, with attendees from Topsham and Sagadahoc granges. The next meeting is March 28 in Richmond Village with Enterprise Grange, prior to supper.

Pfc. Robert Bailey of Fort Devens visits his father Chester Bailey in Bath while Maine National Guard troops from Bath Brunswick Rockland and Portland train at Camp Stewart near Savannah Georgia under Lt Col John Rossnagel. General George C. Carter commends the unit for good spirits and solid training.
Raymond and Jimmie Jones sons of Mr and Mrs Roland Jones of 1419 Washington Street are aboard the U S S Wright on a goodwill tour in the Mediterranean. They have visited Gibraltar Italy Greece and Paris and expect 20 to 30 days leave in Norfolk Virginia at month end. They both trained at Great Lakes.
S/Sgt. Charles W. Godfrey, stationed with the 1917 AACS Squadron in Marion Massachusetts, visits family on a 10 day leave before departing March 9 for Camp Stoneman California and then Tokyo in the 1801st AACS Wing. Archie L. Trainor MM1/C returns to the U S S Daniel A Joy at Great Lakes after a 12 day leave with his Bath Maine sister. Trainor, Morse High School graduate, previously worked at Bath Iron Works and Charles Town Navy Yard Boston.

Gerald Clough stationed in the Southern part of Korea with the U S Air Force informs his mother Mrs Geer Clough of Woolwich that he has been promoted from Pfc to Corporal and says he has received his first copy of the newspaper.

Aboard the Macon heavy cruiser in Philadelphia Navy Yard, a sailor from Woolwich, Mrs Harvey Cabbuck, notes his departure after the dry dock visit and Cuban waters cruise. Pvt. Raymond Robson, of Woolwich, leaves Camp Pickett VA after a furlough with his parents. John O. Butler, son of May Lina Butler, sworn as Warrant Officer at Fort Lee VA, promoted from Master Sergeant. he will remain as Food Service Technician at Fort Lee with nine years of service.

Pvt Nelson A. McCourt arrived at Camp Pickett Georgia last Saturday after a week with his parents Mr and Mrs Andrew S McCourt of 235 Center Street. A Morse High School graduate class of 1947 he joined the Army in October and now awaits transfer with plans to move to California.
Pvt. David A. Brownell son of Mr and Mrs Robert L Brownell of 1475 Washington Street arrived in Japan on February first and is stationed at Sasebo in a replacement battalion. He joined the Army last September after basic training at Fort Dix and Fort Sill and hopes to go to Korea. He invites correspondence at Pvt. David A. H Martin Powers of Bath Iron Works was elected chairman of the Bath Board of Education at the annual meeting. L Lloyd Hooker named Finance Committee chair, Loring R Addison re-elected secretary. Edwin R Andrews did not seek re-election as chairman. Mrs Carrie Smith resignation from North Street Primary accepted.
The Maine Women's Club of New York will gather March 10 at 2 p.m. at the Hotel New Yorker. John H. Brady will speak on The Hoover Report, with soprano Miss Jean Heinemann singing solos and slides of Maine scenery shown by Marion Mg. Kisack of Boothbay Harbor. Afternoon coffee will be served.
A 1951 Nash driven by Lawrence H. Small and a 1940 Chevrolet sedan driven by Cont ey bf 20 Beacon Street skidded on York Street. Estimated total damage to both cars is 50 dollars as reported by Officer Edward F. Newell.

A prettily appointed stork shower was given Friday afternoon at the home of Mrs Maurice Shea on Oliver street for Mrs Roger McAleer of Washington street. The event was a surprise and gifts spilled from a decorated watering pot. Pink and blue decorations framed the decor, refreshments followed in the dining room, and guests included Mrs Carl Langbehn Mrs Earl Horner Mrs Donald Burkhart Mrs Frank Wilson Mrs William Niss Mrs Geor tary Jr Mrs Wilburen Mrs Merritt Shea and Mrs Joseph E Reaser of Battle Creek Michigan visiting her daughter Mrs Mc Aleer.
Sherwood R. Francis told the Independent he is a candidate for Woolwich treasurer and tax collector at the town meeting Friday. He denied rumors of withdrawal and said he would work hard to win the election.

Virgie of Pop's Place was treated at Bath Memorial hospital after a late Saturday assault. He says a 25 year old man wearing a cap and gray coat struck him with a Summer then again near the eye. No money was taken. A prior December 1949 hold up was thwarted by a customer and led to a separate prison sentence for attempted armed robbery.
The 32 room mansion of Frederick M. Dearborn Jr. of Wenham Mass was destroyed by fire on February 25. It was formerly the home of Dr. John C. Phillips and Mrs. Phillips. Mrs. Phillips, a Bath native formerly Eleanor Hyde, is sister to the Hyde brothers of this city. The house held many valuable antiques and household effects were lost. Dearborn is a Boston attorney. Mrs. Phillips now resides in Cambridge at Wendy Knob on Garden and Linnean streets.
State Senator Joseph W. Larrabee and Mrs. Larrabee stay with daughter Mrs. Edward J. McMann on Pleasant street. The senator is confined to bed with virus pneumonia under his physician’s care.
