On Thursday voters chose concrete over gravel for a major Maine highway long criticized as a poor gravel investment. The decision followed opposition from residents and motorists and comes as traffic grows with the Kennebec bridge and a Bucksport Penobscot crossing planned to boost future travel.
Harold P. Small won Bath's municipal election on the Republican ticket by about 450 votes over Democrat John P. Carey Jr. He carried every ward as the city praised a civil campaign. The Winter Street church basketball team of the Y Church league defeated Richmond High 35 to 32 in Richmond. Freddy Hart and Johnny Green led the Bath squad as they traveled at high speed, following a 23-21 win two weeks earlier at Richmond.
A weekly meeting of the Dummer Street boys under ten held at Charles Plummer's home. The session opened with the Lord's prayer and featured a temperance program with a quartet, a duet, and a solo. Refreshments were served. The next meeting is planned for the Plummer home.
Lakeland Georgia earned a profit from its city owned railway serving Lakeland to Naylor, an old tramway revived from 1927 scrap. The city council anticipated a loss of at least $2,000 but posted a net gain of $1,351 this year.
More than 100 members and guests attended the Polar Star Lodge past masters night and reception at Central Church. The event featured a lobster stew dinner, music by the Polar Star quartet, a receiving line with church and parish figures, and an afterpart with entertainment, ice cream, cake, and dancing.
Crowds gathered Sunday at the river front to watch a lighter from the Kennebec Wharf & Coal Co. break away and drift upriver as a derelict, upside down. A Republican supper at the Phoenix honored mayoral candidate Harold Small. About 50 attendees included city committee members and candidates with speeches by Ralph Dale Arthur Purington Walter Glidden and others. Small received a standing ovation as supporters pledged optimism for his election.

A logging incident left a man dangling a foot from an 11,000 volt railroad line as a fallen limb touched high tension wires. N H Bradbury of Portland reported his fine setter dog vanished from home and later returned with a badly swollen forepaw. The animal had been caught in a broken wire snare, indicating the dog was injured by an unlawful snare set in Maine.
A local Eastport resident displayed a box of blue violets that arrived from North Carolina. The flowers, though not Maine brand, were described as fresh and sweet as if just picked, exhibited last week.
Eugene F. Bridges, grocer at 39 Chestnut, will rebuild after a $5,000 fire. He bought the corner lot from O. M.
