Maine Central Boat Hercules Damaged in Expensive Fire
A blaze at 11 30 Tuesday night caused about 15000 worth of damage to the Maine Central spare car boat Hercules tied at the Bath slip. One quarter of the superstructure on the wharf side was destroyed. The fire started in the boiler room and burned slowly with no wind, challenging crews to reach the blaze from hydrants several blocks away. Firefighters used about 5000 feet of hose, two streams, and water from the Ferdinando Gorges to douse the flames. The Hercules, 20 years old, had been rebuilt during the winter by Bath Tron Works Ltd, and work continued as the fire was reported at 1 50.
