Uptown Wins Theatre Name Contest Prize
The winning theatre name Uptown was chosen after 560 letters were sent with 199 different proposed names. Mrs. Trott received the prize in the Times Editorial rooms upon Mr. Gooch’s return. She recalled that the idea came to her quickly and that she will be a guest of honor at the theatre’s opening night.

Winnegance Community Club elects new officers despite debt free status
The Winnegance Community Club held its annual meeting at the community house to mark its 18th year July 1, debt free, with the building from 1922 praised as well suited for the town. Edgar W. Oliver was elected president, with Harry C. Webber named honorary president, and officers Franks P. Perry vice president Almon R. Perry treasurer Charles E. Hewitt Jr secretary Charles E. Preble collector. Directors and finance committee include Webber Perry Eaton, plus president, secretary and treasurer. The club will offer the clubhouse free for non heating season community events with permission. A meeting is set for next Wednesday to prepare the clubhouse and lawn for summer and plan the mid July lawn party.

James Welden Johnson 67, famed educator poet author and lawyer, died after a Coupe collided with an eastbound train at Maine Street crossing Wiscasset. Mrs Grace Johnson injured with cuts fractures of skull, crossing near Sheepscot River bridge. Johnson taught at NYU and Fisk University, wrote extensively, consul in Venezuela and Nicaragua.

Destroyer Sampson Impresses in First Builders Trial
President William S. Newell of Bath Iron Works reported USS Sampson a 1850 ton destroyer built locally performed well in its first sea trial. The ship launched April 16left at 9 a.m. and returned at 8 p.m. after a run to Penobscot Bay and Monhegan.

Haskell Prints Attract Maine Viewers At Bowdoin Exhibit
An exhibit of 20 Ernest Haskell prints at Bowdoin College’s Walker Art building draws art lovers from Maine. The late artist lived in West Point on Casco Bay and produced etchings of West Point, Phippsburg, Winneganee, and Casco Bay. His career spanned New York, Paris, posters, and etching with praise from critics. he died in a 1925 automobile accident. Mrs. Haskell has lived in Maine, with a summer camp at West Point.

Grandfather's Clock Over 200 Years Old
A Bath home houses a father’s clock believed to be about 200 years old. It once served in the Old Hussey Tavern in Nobleboro known as the Halfway House on the Bath Rockland stage route. The plate shows it was made in Birmingham England. It belonged to the great uncle of the current owner and was stored under the tavern eaves. The clock has been overhauled and runs well.
