Portland man James Manning identified as dead in Merrymeeting Bay mystery
The body found at Bowdoinham on the Merrymeeting Bay shore is identified as 55 year old James F. Manning of Portland a transient engineer last seen Sept 18 1937. His two sons identified personal effects from the clothing and authorities call the death accidental drowning after tracing his final movements near Bath and Woolwich.

Bertha Ward Sues for 10000 Damages Over Bath Explosion
Mrs. Bertha Ward of North Bath widow of Arthur Ward files a $10,000 damage suit in Sagadahoc Superior Court. She alleges the March 1 explosion that leveled Plant's Garage killed her husband and fellow worker Henry Fuller, injuring five others. Ward, an electrician at Bath Iron Works, was on the garage lot leaving repairs when the blast occurred at 6:56 a.m. He died from a fractured skull.

Firemen praised for fine record for many years
Dr. David L. Wilson delivered the memorial address at Bath Firemen’s Memorial Association services in Oak Grove cemetery. A 1932 Morse High School graduate, he earned a BA from the University of Maine in 1937, and an MA from Indiana University last week. He plans a three year PhD program teaching Baltic and English Naval Relations, with a published thesis that won the honor. His mother Mrs Miriam J Murray of 31 Edwards Street and Times and Independent staff share pride in his achievements.

The new Columbian Hall in Bath replaces the old theatre and Columbian Hall destroyed by fire. The modern venue features a gas lit footlights era design, orchestra balcony, multiple seating tiers, and upgraded rest rooms. It opened recently with a Colonial club party and aims to host large community gatherings alongside the adjacent YMCA.

Elmer W Geneau charged with breaking into Mrs Wirta s home with intent to commit a felony. Bruns wick group charged with breaking into Hotel Sedgwick March 30 1938. William E Belanger Jr faced non support and desertion charges. Hallowell Bath woman charged with cruel abusive treatment of her 7 year old daughter Betty Seavey.
