City budget submitted after Wednesday meeting in 1948
The 1948 city budget presented by Manager Mittendorf totals 956 815 57 dollars with 419 018 receipts and 537 797 57 to be raised by tax. A public hearing is set for Monday night June 14 at seven to allow input on estimates. The plan reduces the contingency fund and ends the YMCA tax, cutting two mills from the original four mill rise. Some council members push for a 20 000 school budget cut to hold tax at present rate, while others note statewide school expenditures rise. The council controls final school budget, and Mittendorf notes a new budget method increases both revenue and expenditures but not the net result. Forty departmental reductions cover salaries and clerical expenses, and the budget includes a full amount of items with revenue anticipated in the same schedule. (Continued on Page Two).

Kennebec Crafts Builds Fine Boats in Bath
The Kennebec Crafts shipyard in Bath continues a colonial boat building tradition with about 15 acres of shorefront and a small staff. Ed and the late W Starling Burgess designed and built several sloops now awaiting final touches for summer races from Small Point to coastal towns. The yard also performs repairs on various craft, including a Fisher Island sloop owned by John K Jayne and a graceful sloop owned by Dr Greenlaw of Auburn. The article notes many boats are waiting completion and that work centers on Seacoast racing and seaworthy restoration.
