Battle over Hells Canyon dam vs smaller Idaho Power dams
A Council of State Chambers study argues the Idaho Power Company plan to build three smaller Snake River dams would cost $133 million to $195 million privately funded, while a federal Hells Canyon dam would require $465 million in public funds for about 785,000 kilowatts. The report notes this would raise taxes across states, with significant national impact, and warns such projects could expand federally controlled hydro projects nationwide, adding about $1.2 billion in public spending.
