Fishermen faced low Maine market prices hit hard at harbor
Phippsburg fishermen on the Maine coast report dire returns as market prices collapse. After long hauls and effort to load bait, trawls, and supply Portland buyers, they receive as little as 10 to 15 cents per hundred pounds. The drop follows a brief spike, with wholesalers paying scant returns, while consumer prices remain comparatively higher. Local society notes mention church and school events, personnel changes, and an epidemic of measles among Basin residents.
