David C. Magoun recalls Bath 100 years ago describing self sufficiency. No radios or telephones and travel by horse or ox drawn wagons. Lobsters speared at low tide and ships financed by workers savings. Labor long days, simple kitchens, and scarce luxury reflect a town transformed by time.
Citizens should plan improvements with permanence in mind so future Bath residents will appreciate the heritage left for the bicentennial celebration.
Donald R. Grapes of Bath and Ralph P. Wallace of War were found guilty of malicious mischief and fined 100 each with court costs of 4.20. They faced three months in Augusta jail. Staples and Wallace were arrested Thursday on related charges. Robert L. Maines of West Portland was fined 4.70 for an unrelated motor vehicle incident. S. Foss of Portland pled not guilty to a stop sign violation at Richardson and streets and was given six months probation.
Police rounded up eight intoxicated men at the city park bandstand on Saturday afternoon. An escape attempt stalled by railing fencing and another by wagon were interrupted. Neighbors praise the department for curbing the ongoing disturbance.
Three intoxication cases were heard by Judge Gardi ner R. Deering in Saturday Municipal Court. All respondents pleaded guilty and were ordered to pay fines of 5 dollars and court costs of 5.15 or serve 15 days in Kennebec County jail in Augusta.

The group scheduled Sagadahoc Pomona with Woolwich Orange on July 25 for an afternoon and evening session with supper at six, with lady officers overseeing and Mrs. Charlotte Leeman assisting. New grange badges were distributed and available through secretary Mrs. Florence Smith. The group will recess until August 20, closing with an old fashioned community sing led by Miss Dolly Graves at the piano.
Albert Henderson found his auto on fire in the garage on Union street and called Mrs. Henderson to summon the fire department. The fire was nearly out by the time firefighters arrived as Henderson battled the blaze with water and expressed gratitude for the department’s prompt response. Rev and Mrs Purddhe Linna Marie and Alice Lorraine visited the Kingsburys at their summer home in Chochorura New Hampshire.
Dr and Mrs R Johnson and their children of Washington Street have returned home after spending the month at their summer place at Ocean Point.
