Fourth of July safety amid city fires and losses
The Fourth passed with few serious city incidents while nationwide deaths neared three hundred from highway crashes and drownings. A major fire in the idle Texas shipyard burned unoccupied buildings and one residence belonging to Elmer W. Rogers, which was destroyed. Firefighters contained the blaze to nearby homes with limited damage. The fire origin remained unclear but electrical wiring was unlikely since the starter building was not powered.
