Beginnings of the Kennebec Bridge Movement
The Kennebec Bridge movement raised funds in three counties with broad backing from the Portland Chamber of Commerce and Rockland firms. Legislators debated toll versus free bridge plans, a statewide referendum approved issuing bonds, and the bridge was later named the Carlton Bridge with dedication planned by the Bridge Commission.
