He criticized federal and state bills to create a government or state power plant at Niagara Falls arguing private utility firms could build and operate with self-financing on market rates.
The U S S Mitscher began its launch on a windy Bath Maine morning drawing a large crowd, despite poor skies. Witnesses praised Bath shipbuilders and tug crews for deftly preventing contact with the Carlton bridge as the vessel entered the dock, promising a grand future launch celebration.
Maine police chiefs at the association meeting in Brunswick tackled parking meter issues and new laws on emergency mental health commitments. Richard Kenyon four year old son of Mr and Mrs Frank Kenyon of 402 Center street was rushed to Bath Memorial hospital Friday about 210 after sliding into a car on Lark street. Police say Carroll Mac Allister Jr driving west swerved to avoid children sliding down a bank and the Kenyon boy on a sled hit a rear wheel. He was not seriously hurt and returned to hospital for observation after treatment of cuts and bruises to the face.
The Bath Red Cross outlines a Maine blood drive to supply armed forces with a yearly target of 24 000 pints. Each mobile unit carries a physician six RNs and six beds and four donors can be collected per hour. Endorsement and funding from every Maine chapter are required before action.
Morse High school student council hosted a concert in the assembly hall at 11 a.m. featuring a piano and marimba duo. Miss Loweln Cook, marimba, and Clair Omar Musser, piano, performed classical and popular pieces. William Bruce introduced them. Cook, a senior at South Illinois University, is taking time off for the tour. Musser holds a master's degree.
Roger Thibeault of Brunswick and Arthur J Michalos of Bath pleaded guilty in municipal court Thursday to speeding. Thibeault was cited for 65 mph in a 25 zone, fined 15 dollars plus 4.70 costs. Mihalos was cited for 40 mph in a 15 zone, fined 10 dollars plus 4.70 costs. A 17 year old Bath girl faced probation violation with a term at Skowhegan Reformatory for Women.
David Smith son of Mr and Mrs Leonard Smith of West Bath celebrated his ninth birthday on January 19 with a movie party for friends. After the film the children returned to his home for gifts games cake ice cream and hot dogs. Attending were Raymond and Randall Clark Amy Brenda and Joe Eddy Jaquith Ronald and Donald Farr Dale and Donna Smith Karen Smith David Tardiff Richard Johnson Tommy and Peter Robinson Paul Boardway Russell Estes Everett and Roger McNelly George Pickard and Lee Merryfield.
Club Forty-Two met Wednesday with President Mrs Edward Jones leading a short session and games. The weekly prize, contributed by Mrs Joseph Mack, went to Mrs David Clark, with Mrs James Daly chosen to bring next week's prize. Members present included Mrs Jones Mrs Mack Mrs Clark Mrs Daly Mrs Howard Farr Mrs Robert Hamblett Mrs Norman Adams Mrs Everett Coke Mrs William Greene and others.
Pine Tree Troop 1 met Wednesday at Lambert Park Community building. Mrs Harold Graffam led songs. Attendance and dues were collected by patrol leaders. The patrols planned a Valentine party and worked on badges. Meeting closed with the Good Night Circle and Courts of Honor.
Peter Brownies Troop 11 met Monday afternoon at Grace Episcopal church parish house. The session opened with songs and the Brownie Promise. Attendees included Mary McLaughlin and several parents aiding with crafts and funds. The troop split to complete Tender Foot requirements and to start a scrapbook, closing with Good Night Tunnel.
City Health Officer R. Clinton McFadden reports 30 measles cases currently in the city. He notes his office provides local physicians with immune serum globulin, a preventive and modifier in treatment, supplied by the American Red Cross to state health departments for distribution to local authorities.
A Bathman pleaded guilty to an intoxication charge on Tuesday morning and was fined $10 plus $5.15 costs. Chief Frank L. Moriarty was the complainant, with Judge Gardiner R. Deering presiding.
The Y.M.C.A. hosts a first half winter carnival with sled races for single and double riders on a steep hill, Husky Dog Team Race, ski race on a cross country course, downhill and uphill racing, snow sculpturing, and a large snow fort. The first penny carnival hosted by Pack 52 of Corliss Street church at South End P T A hall Friday evening drew large attendance and funds, securing annual status. Special awards went to Mrs Edna Chadbourne and Anne Moffatt. Committee members included Clyde Morton, Howard Farr, Vance Wakefield, Paul Strube, Al Chapman, Harold Brackett, Louis MacDonald, and Ralph Card, with many volunteers.
Mrs William P Hatch of Washington Street suffered a fall on Tuesday afternoon while returning home and broke an ankle. X rays at Memorial Hospital Wednesday showed the injury and her leg was placed in a cast.
