Missing Picture in State Gallery of Ex Governors
In Lewiston Journal, Arthur Staples retells the story of Benjamin Ames of Bath, Maine, a speaker who became acting governor for one month in 1820. The piece notes the first Maine administration had three governors that year and laments the missing portrait of Ames in Augusta. It traces Ames from Andover to Harvard, Bath, and his legal training under Samuel Dana, amid Maine political feuding between Federalists and Democrats.
