Birch Bark Canoe Endures as Maine Craft Tradition
I A Bailey of Dresden Mills in Gardiner Journal notes old birch bark canoes as relics in Maine. He cites Francis Stanislaus’s Lincoln canoe, built by his father over thirty years ago, and another Chesuncook piece twenty years old with inside bark and decorative scraping. The piece details how bark is sourced, formed, and joined, compares birch and canvas canoes, and extols durability and safety on Maine waters.
