Downing for stabilizing finances and guiding the hospital toward renewed confidence and community support.
Senator Alexander Wiley of Wisconsin proposes a top level strategy board to devise methods of fomenting revolutions, guerilla actions, and sabotage in Communist nations. He argues Russia uses Communist parties in democracies and says domestic disruption could deter a future world war.
Wiley argued that helping others avoid war and pursue freedom requires arming themselves against modern dictators. He stated that a country cannot revolt against a modern armed regime without weapons and that supporting others aligns with our professed principles of freedom.
The Supreme Court returned control of the Dollar Steamship Line to the company bearing the family name after a long fight led by Stanley Dollar. Details remain to be worked out, but the Dollar Line is set to sail again.
The First Naval District announces $5.5 million for reactivating the Brunswick Naval Air Facility in Maine. Four million funds will pay work, 1.5 million rehabilitates. Plans include extending one runway, new taxiways, and revamping the parking apron and structures. Contracts awarded to Fay Spofford Thorndyke. bids by March 15. work to start April 1 with 100 workers rising to 350 by month end.
Justice Francis W. Sullivan of Cape Elizabeth signed 14 divorce decrees at the January term adjournment for cruel and abusive treatment. Names include Betts and Betts of West Bath, Curtis and Curtis of Topsham, Welch and Welch of Woolwich, Michaud of Bath, Hastings and Hastings of Huron, Marsh and Marsh of Stockton Springs, Furrow and Farrow of Bath, Holt of Bath, Greenleaf of Georgetown, Crane and Crane of Bath, Stilphen of Bath, LaRochelle of Bath, Stanton and Stanton of Bath, and Ferdinando of Bath with Barbara Gage Ferdinando in Derry granted right to resume maiden name Gage Small.
Mrs James I Noftall co chairman of the Woman's Division of National Foundation of Infantile Paralysis for Saga dahoc county announced that she and Mrs Algernon Shorette with help from Mrs Granville Colby sponsor a Polio Tag Day. The event spans Friday after school and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. Teen Age Sewing Circle and 4 H club girls will serve as taggers under Mrs Colby's direction.
Mrs Barbara Weeks and Miss Isabel Fifield of Elite Beauty Salon along with Mrs Muriel Mehlborn and Miss Terry Doiron of Lynn Carole Beauty Shoppe depart Bath early Monday to attend the Boston Cosmetologist convention and will remain away through Thursday.
Five Bath and vicinity men were sworn in Monday by the U S Air Force Recruiting Station at the post office. They include William F. Brown Richard A. McMann Amos R. Greenleaf William H. Sanford Jr and Pelham E. Howe slated for Lackland AFB Texas. Brown and McMann are Morse High graduates both 18. Greenleaf 17 a Morse attendee, Howe 19 a Morse graduate, Sanford 18 Morse attendee.
Mrs Nellie D Arcy entertained Tuesday last week at her Bruce street home with a lobster menu supper and a canasta session. Red and white decorations featured a carnation centerpiece and tall red candles. Prizes went to Mrs Lloyd Perry and Ralph Wright with Ralph Wright and Harry Bennett receiving the men's high prize and consolation. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Frank Bates, Mr and Mrs Lloyd Perry, Mr and Mrs Ralph Wright, Harry Bennett, and Mrs D Arcy.
Milo T. Wedge of Port's Jenny station in Bath earned an honorary award from a national windshield wiper manufacturer in a safety service program. The recognition cited his careful attention to the needs of customers whose cars and trucks he services.
Mrs. Fred Curtis Jr the daughter Beth Ann and son Gary of Searsport arrived to visit her parents Mr and Mrs Max Katz of Cobb road and her sister and husband Mr and Mrs Lawrence Katz of Andrews road for a family gathering with relatives in town.
Gerald F. Holland, 42, of Bath, was fined 150 for drunken driving and 25 each for operating after revocation and leaving the scene. A three month jail term on the drunken driving charge was suspended on payment. He earlier pleaded guilty in Brunswick to DUI and license revocation penalties. Police report he side swiped a bus and collided with two cars, causing about 70 dollars bus damage and 225 dollars to Elmer Carter’s car.
West Bath Farm Bureau met at the grange hall with 16 members in attendance. The program titled Food For Freedom was led by Mrs. Charlotte Leeman of Woolwich, County Foods Leader, with Mrs. Pauline Belanger presiding and dinner served by Belanger and Mrs. Hazel Wharff.
Bath police met with a city study committee to discuss seniority rights and a ranking plan. A prior session with City Manager Ralph Mittendorf is noted. Reports suggest internal disagreement over desired changes and a vote against freezing shift hours. The council committee includes Sturtevant, Allen, Sonia, Adams and McElman.
Mr and Mrs James B Le Mont of West Bath are spending several weeks in Boston and its suburbs for an extended visit.
Morse High School hosts the Girl Scout Leaders training course in Room D under Bailey Evening school with instructor Mrs. Caroline Klein. Twelve attended the first session. more volunteers sought to join every Monday from seven to nine for eight weeks. Betsy Bertrand elected Juliet Low representative. Patricia Mullaney to arrange Feb 14 guest and Feb 21 Thinking Day events. Three more $1 subscriptions needed for The American Girl magazine order.
Wild Rose Troop 2 met at 6 Garden Street Tuesday for its regular weekly session with all members present. Dues and attendance were taken. Used ecards are being collected for delivery next week. After the business meeting the girls, led by Mrs. Ernest Sinclair and Mrs. Clinton Owen, went skating at the rink.
Bluebird Brownies Troop 10 gathered at the Corliss Street vestry Monday afternoon led by Mrs Zlypha Richardson with help from Mrs Vinal K and Mrs Duncan Farrell. Juliet Low was collected by Susan Farrell who led the Brownie Promise and Smile song.
The Peter Pan Brownies met Monday afternoon at Grace Episcopal church parish house with leaders Mrs. Ralph Card and Mrs. Thomas S. Aiken head. Attendance was taken by Bette Anne Aikenhead and dues collected by Jill Ruth Olsen and Bette Anne Aikenhead. Virginia Percy and Ann Russell led Budget Jars. The remainder of the meeting focused on clay modeling and preparing for next week’s craft with old felt and yarn for coin purses. The Good Night Tunnel closed the session.
Ten seventh and eighth grade girls study First Aid under William Hanson at Weeks Street School Monday evening. Mrs. Pashard supervises. Nine sixth graders meet Friday after school with Mrs. Oliver Foster on Middle Street for sewing and needlecraft. Six girls meet Monday at Mrs. Everett White on High Street for second class requirements. Two new girls work with Mrs. Charles Murray on Tenderfoot requirements.
An officials clinic led by Alfred Parks at the Y M C A trained high school and eighth grade boys acting as referees and umpires in winter leagues. The session covered pregame procedures, duties of officials, court etiquette, and rule discussions with 14 aspiring junior officials named.
Rotary club hears Ray Hearn of Auburn discuss erosion water loss and forest fire damage threatening the food supply. He urges conservation forestry and soil enrichment with community action and praises the state Forestry Department. Roundtable on Rotary aims next week. Junior guests and visiting Rotarians present.
The Bath Memorial hospital annual meeting notes the resignation of Mrs Thomas Murphy and the Auxiliary chairmanship of Flower committee by Mrs Roscoe P McFadden. Mrs Gillys expresses pride in the cooperative efforts. Auxiliary purchases report a wide variety of items for departments. The medical staff held twelve regular and three special meetings. Dr Francis A Winchenbach reports over 300 consultations written and recorded.
Hon. and Mrs Arthur Sewall departed Wednesday for a brief stay in New York City guests.
Bath volunteers at Central Fire Station discuss a plan by Manager Ralph Mittendorf to cut active members to 44 while boosting pay. The measure would keep current call men at 55 to 70 dollars and raise others from 110 to 140 annually, with unanimous support from attending members.
Mrs. Charlotte Smith from Orono will lead a tailoring refresher for leaders who completed the four day extension tailoring schools. The session is January 23 at 10 at the Auburn Y M C A with attendees including Mrs. Pauline Belanger Mrs. Beatrice Adams Mrs. Lillian Henderson and Mrs. Frances Harrington.
Petlock of 11 Raymond court Bath, a scrap metal dealer, arraigned in Bath on a continued charge of receiving stolen goods. He waived hearing and reading of the warrant, pleaded not guilty, and appealed to the June term of Sangadahoc County Superior Court. Judge Gardiner R. Deering fined him $50 with costs of $6.90 following the appeal. The Bath case arose after a municipal court conviction of Raymond Christopher for larceny of 97% pounds of copper valued at $20 from Bath Iron Works Corp.
One intoxication case was before Judge Gardiner D. Deer in Bath Municipal Court. The respondent was fined $5 and costs of $6.50 and given seven days to pay.
Mrs Leo Clifford of Flushing Long Island New York is a guest of Mr and Mrs Andrew M Butterfield on Washington Street.
About 800 people attended at Morse Auditorium as Bath Parents Teacher Council staged Grandma’s Little Gray Goat and Color Fantasies. Basil and Georgia Milovsor of Folktale radio Norwich VT presented the puppets and explained how they were made from found materials.
A meeting in Lewiston formed a 4-H Junior Leaders project for Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties. Norma Ray explained aims. officers elected include Wendall Nason as president and Alma Goodwin as secretary, with attendees from Bath and Minot.
The Morse St Doms hockey game planned for Friday night at the Western Avenue skating rink is postponed due to poor ice caused by warm weather in the past two to three days.
