Ships and a coal firm in Maine history and a death
The article notes the renaming of Destroyer 74 to U S S Manley and its later conversion to a ferry, with the U S S Levant named for Captain John Manley, a Revolutionary War figure born in 1733 in England and linked to New England. It recounts Manley’s sea service, capture and escape, and death in 1793, then shifts to Randall and McAllister Coal Co. of Portland, tracing its origins from Sawyer and Randall about 68 years earlier and noting the first shipment of 100 tons of anthracite coal from Philadelphia to Maine. It also mentions a chimney fire in Auburn requiring 57 gallons of extinguishing agents with no damage, and records the death of Mrs. John McInnes on Tuesday.
