Whales Gather Near Bath Lightship Off Delaware Capes
The Bath built lightship Five Fathom, about 20 miles off the Delaware Capes, reported an extraordinary whale sighting with three whales within five miles of the ship. The crew also briefly mistook a whale for a submarine, adding a dramatic close encounter to the voyage. Shipping men speculate the whales are feeding in Gulf Stream waters.

Edgecomb Cut-Off to Join Federal Road Plan
Edgecomb officials favor a federal aid project to replace the current circuitous route with a direct cut-off from the long bridge to Davis Island. The plan, 1.05 miles, would shorten travel to Boothbay, Wiscasset, Bath and Rockland, with federal funding covering about half the cost. Officials say present road improvements through Edgecomb would still be needed, with total state expense near zero beyond standard upgrades.
