Locomotives and Fuel Loss Facts

The article notes that a passenger locomotive uses one pound of fuel per 52 feet traveled and that unnecessary stops for heavy trains cause coal losses between 500 and 750 pounds. A brake-line leak on a 50-car train can waste up to 2540 pounds in ten hours, and each minute of idle time costs about 75 pounds. Saving a shovelful of coal per ton could yield about one percent of total coal handled.
