A new marriage law requires officiants to hold valid commission notes from the governor and to insert their commission date on certificates. It tightens penalties for uncommissioned ceremonies and clarifies license display at the ceremony. Clergy from other states must respect Maine rules when officiating.
Mrs. Durinda S. Adams, aged and beloved mother of several, gathers children Ella, William, and Carrie for Christmas at the Bowdoin homestead. Toasts, greetings, and a festive menu mark the reunion as the family contemplates future anniversaries and parting.
A West Durning resident Cook reported theft of bred Pekin ducks from the Pond district. The loss involved valuable birds and was linked to the Mayers family in Massachusetts, with the ducks allegedly sent away for unclear purposes.
A group of 22 well known young men gathered at the Columbia hotel to welcome 1908 with a nine o'clock turkey dinner and late speeches after cigars. Eugene Ingalls of North Bath returning from Baltimore reports a weak market for Christmas trees. He says dealers lost money selling at low prices and he himself lost over 150 dollars. To avoid cartage costs he gave away many trees on Christmas Eve with four workers, noting an oversupplied, overdone business amid limited local employment. Baltimore enjoyed nearly perfect summer weather that week.
Amateur performance of Patience at Columbia for Mendelssohn club benefits from two weeks under George Lowell Tracy. Bath soloists lead a strong cast including Miss Mary R. Low Miss Brenda Emery Mrs. George W. Berry Miss Clara Pierce Miss Alice Humphreys Leland T. Hodgkins Allan Irish Herbert E. Williams Arthur B. Stearns Dr. Fred J. McTeer and fifty chorus members. Patience repeats tomorrow night.
Bodwell Grange of Phippsburg will hold its annual officer installation next Saturday night with a large turnout. A big chicken dinner is planned after the exercises. Local politicians are getting involved in the upcoming spring campaign, and spirited contests for various honors are likely despite talk of harmony.
The State Military and Naval Orphan asylum hosted a large New Year’s concert last night. Gifts hung on Christmas trees were distributed to the boys and girls, followed by a program of songs recitations and dialogues performed by the orphans and attendees. The lineup included pieces such as Sweet Be Thy Slumbers, With Joy We Sing, The Christ Child, and The Russian Santa Claus alongside various recitations and solos.
The Bath market remains lively with strong prices for most produce. Eggs dropped to 35 to 36 cents a dozen as pullets begin laying. apples bring $1 per bushel for table fruit and 50 to 75 cents for cooking varieties. Potatoes fetch 65 to 70 cents a bushel. squash at 20 to 30 cents per pound. cabbage beets and turnips at 1 cent per pound. dairy butter unavailable this week. veal 9 cents, chicken 17 cents, fowl 14 cents, lamb 14 cents, hog 8 to 9 cents, and hay at $14 per ton.
The Hillcrest Poultry Farm Co is formed with J F Upton as president, George D Weston as treasurer and general manager, and Arthur J Dunton as clerk. Capital is 10000 dollars with 10 dollar shares. The firm will develop the Hillcrest farm in Phippsburg, raise sheep, add poultry houses and incubators, and Mr Weston plans a big business expansion.
Sunday services drew large attendance and marked power. In the afternoon the annual election of officers was held in the Sunday school and all existing officers were reelected. The Sunday evening meeting followed with life and definite work accomplished.
