Dirigo the ocean racer from Bath naval architects
A Bath pair, George F. Cary and Robert McAleer, design a 40 ft 3 in strip built ocean racing sailboat named Dirigo. Built at East Boothbay by Paul E. Luke, it will launch in spring for long distance races. The project is funded by Bath Racing Syndicate with shares sold to local yachtsmen. The boat seats six to seven, uses a fin keel with centerboard, sleeps four, and aims for Bermuda and other ocean events.

Fine new home for Bath VFW is now occupied
Bath Veterans of Foreign Wars finally have a new home on Middle Street after years of search and fundraising. Alvin P Williams financed the site and local helpers built and furnished 807 Middle Street with a 30 by 70 foot building including a 30 by 40 foot meeting room and a 20 by 20 kitchen. The Dug Out recreational space will hold pool and ping pong tables and Williams apartment keeps the facility open to members. The VFW expects membership to surpass 100 by spring as the new home draws in veterans.

Dike Minstrels Fight For Glasses and Mimeograph Fund
The Dike P T A will sponsor the Dike Minstrels at Morse High School on March 3 to raise funds for glasses for children and to purchase a mimeograph machine for Dike school. The 1949 show drew large crowds and funded a movie projector used in teaching and loaned to other city schools. Directed by Mrs Edmund Ford with musical direction by Henry Kit Totman Bath School of Music, the two part program features End Men routines and comedy acts.

Destroyer Ludlow Repairs After Boiler Blowout
The Bath built destroyer USS Ludlow is at Brooklyn Navy Yard for boiler repairs after an explosion 60 miles off Cape May. Capt Edward F Andrews of Westfield N J led the crew to man stations as darkness fell. Coast Guard tender Gentian aided the limping ship, which reached port on two boilers. Ludlow launched Armistice Day 1940 from Bath Iron Works Hull 183 and delivered March 5, 1941.
