In Maine the winter brings few hardships with many pleasures. Skating, skiing, tobogganing, and sleighing flourish as snow lies light and roads stay passable. Snow cover enables wood haulage for spring. glazes from freezing rain create beautiful scenes, while coastlines host many coasting and skiing gatherings.
Bowdoinham selectmen report a clean year with all current debts paid, temporary loans and interest retired, and only under $150 in uncollected taxes without liens. A $1,000 bond was retired and the town holds a bank balance, inspiring pride and urging careful appropriations to keep taxes low for the coming municipal year.
Maine plans national advertising for its blueberry crop aiming to grow demand among residents and summer visitors. The fruit, used in pie or cake, could be sold year round in containers, expanding markets. The broader Maine product strategy includes successful potato grading and publicity boosting demand for multiple regional foods.
George B Connard captained a fast, memorable Mediterranean trip for 75 Legion members and guests, from the Pyramids to Rome with Cairo, Naples, Pompeii, Venice and Paris. The program featured turkey dinner, song led by Waldo Marshall, piano by Mrs. Donald D. Young, and color slides. The post reported good finances and building renovations, with many sustaining members and guests including local officials and Auxiliary president Mrs. Costain.
Lou Cooper a Bath Iron Works welder and State heavyweight champion returns to the ring Friday evening March 3 in Augusta City Hall in a 10 round feature bout against Gus Caret of Augusta. His last bout December 2 ended with a knockout of Johnny Buckley in three rounds at the Capital City. Castillo has been rematched with Cal Holmes in Augusta for March 17 and has a planned 10 round main event in Fall River February 21 against Joey Greb.
John L. Logue 35 of Portland, a mobile mechanic, died from a fractured skull after a car he was working on slipped from a jack in Auburn last week. He formerly lived in Bath and served as service manager at Plant's garage for about six months in 1937, later working in Portland and most recently for Puritan Chevrolet at the Auburn branch.
Mrs Leonard F Wetherbee directed folk dancing and Mrs Louis A Dole led dramatics at a Pine Tree Trap No 1 meeting at the YMCA. Afterward 21 girls and three leaders including Mrs Alfred E Carpenter and Mrs Harold J Carter rode with Harold Freeman driving to his home for lunch. the party was praised as one of the best.
Miss Gertrude Grimard of Skowhegan captured the ladies potato race during the Fun Night program at the city skating rink on Thursday. Ralph Dodge of Bath won the men's racing event.
Mrs. Mary Gardenier and her son George arrived Saturday to spend the weekend with James T. Gardenier on Upper High Street.
George Baer Connard spoke to the Bath Teachers Club at Morse high school, showing colored travelogue pictures from the Mediterranean. He illustrated Naples Pompeii Venice Rome Athens Cairo and the Holy Land, followed by a plan to stage a play later and a May meeting with supper. About 55 attended and refreshments were served by a long list of local volunteers.

Mr and Mrs Arthur Sewall two presented the Patten Free Library this week a copy of Birds of America with 1 065 colored plates by John James Audubon. The oversized heavy page book is kept for reading room use and eventual reference and is among the most valuable gifts in months for bird lovers.
Mr and Mrs Edward R Mank were honored with a miscellaneous shower at Woolwich Grange last week. The event included a social hour and dancing after gifts, with cake and coffee served. A short program featured a flag salute and Lincoln topic, followed by Thought for the Day Things to Forget.

Mrs. Richard Quick of 300 Washington Street received a cable announcing Capt. Quick's arrival in Antwerp Beligue aboard the new steamship Connecticut after a 16 day passage from Port Arthur Texas with oil. The vessel was to depart for Dublin with the remaining cargo and is said to have completed its first foreign voyage in satisfactory fashion. The Connecticut is expected to return to Port Arthur around March 1.
The Holland government donates one million flowering bulbs for the New York World's Fair to Maine's Exhibit Area spanning 390 acres. About 935,000 tulips 46 000 hyacinths 11,700 camassias are being planted to enhance the landscape.
The 68th annual New England Spring Flower Show by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society runs March 16 to 21 in Mechanics Building Boston. It features Gardening Down the Ages with eight historically themed gardens and a New England mansion estate display by the Massachusetts Garden Clubs in Grand Hall.
Mr and Mrs Herman Hallet suffered minor injuries when their Chevrolet coupe was forced off Lower High street and down an embankment near Williams court. Harold M Rogers driving a Ford coupe collided head on. Both cars damaged on the left side. Rogers uninjured. Accident at 6 55 p m blamed on icy road. Owners settled matter mutally.
Daughters of Isabella held a business meeting in the hall voted to host a Valentine party for children with Katherine Madden named general chairman. Ada Noftal headlined commendations for the Sunday banquet at Hotel Sedgwick. February and March house and social committees listed. Regent Ann Perry presided.
Bath Lodge of Elks will hold a smoker at the Home on Lombard street February 21 with George Boutin as chairman, joined by D. Joseph Doyle and John Mullaney. They seek the Gannett cup at the State Ritualistic contest in Portland February 26. A May 1 ball will aid crippled children of Maine. Doyle and Allen elected to senior posts. McMann named Mullaney chaplain.
Trustees of Memorial Hospital unanimously re-elected the staff of physicians and surgeons and the staff of registered nurses at the annual meeting. The nominating committee may report on committee personnel at the next meeting, scheduled for March 8 in the mayor's office. The new hospital reception room is nearly finished and will be furnished by the Junior Hospital League.
The Girl Scouts will devote March to nature study with Mrs. Frank S. Saunders Mrs. Percy R. Low and Mrs. Harry E. Collins in charge. Captains should send questions to Mrs. Saunders promptly. In early April the Leaders Association will stage a folk dance festival for troops in Bath and invited guests with Mrs. Linwood F. Carr as chair and aides Miss Ruth Lemoine and Mrs. Leonard F. Wetherbee.
Edward Jenks, living with Mrs. Lincoln Williams on Foster's Point road in West Bath, has returned home from Bath Memorial hospital where he recuperates following a throat operation.
James W. Temple, Bath native and University of Maine alum, shared his Warm Springs treatment experiences at a joint Central church and Winter Street church Men’s club meeting. He described his paralysis, admission process, and yearlong recovery aided by hot baths, medical tests, and staff, highlighting gratitude to donors and the foundation’s work.
At a regular meeting of the Ladies aid of Winter Street church Friday afternoon Mrs. Herbert Lemont spoke on Maine minerals and gems. She displayed over 100 specimens from Morris W. Potter, Mrs. Eugene Osgood, and her own collection, ending with an original Maine poem. Hostesses were Mrs. Walter H. Bowker and others. Rehearsals for the play Our Church Fair are advancing, with next Friday’s meeting set for new hostesses.
Maynard Smith a resident inspector for General Electric and Bath Iron Works was honored at a farewell dinner with 30 attendees. He is transferred to Rio de Janeiro to oversee GE equipment on destroyers and will sail soon for South America. He leaves Boston Friday morning.
The Girl Scout Leaders' Association presents Your Flag and Mine on February 22 in the Masonic temple to observe International Thinking. Scouts from Brownies to troops will participate in pastel costumes. Guest speaker Mrs. Noel C. Little will discuss international friendship. Mrs. Sadie Sarkis will speak on Syria and Egypt. Committee in charge includes Mrs. Jacob Smith chair, with Mrs. Stanley R. Hunter and Mrs. Alfred E. Carpenter.

About 200 attendees gathered at the Morse high school gym for a Valentine party as Rudy Wallace and his nine piece band played from eight to midnight. The decorated gym hosted a fundraising dance for the class trip with patrons and patronesses listed.
Mrs Langdon T Snipe delivered a warm review of the season’s top seller All This and Heaven Too by Rachel Field at the Rotary Ans luncheon in Sedgwick. She also mentioned Daphne DuMaurier’s Rebecca and Theda Kenyon’s Scarlet Anne about Anne Hutchinson. The meeting was presided by vice president Ed ward W Bridgham in Mrs Pred D Hill’s absence. Hill expected March 2 arrival to discuss winter travels.
Mrs. Ernest M Holman of Camden returns to Les Camarades Musicaux with a welcome at Allan H Ramsay home 221 Oak Street. She spoke on what membership means to her as the group featured a program of quartets duets solos and trios with Mrs Holman Mr Ramsay Mrs Albee and others performing under pianist accompaniment.
Salvation Army advisory committee met Friday night at Water Street headquarters to review a year of work and set dates for the maintenance appeal starting July 15. Officers were re elected as Edward W. Bridgham presided and Dr. David L. Wilson led prayer. George B. Wolstenholme became publicity chair and Mayor Donald N. Small joined the board.
The Morse High School class of 1912 presents the school with a bass horn to aid the orchestra. Inscribed on the instrument is Presented to Morse High by the class of 1912. Committee members Mrs. Robert H. Haskell Ernest Wood and Mrs. Rodney E. Ross organized the purchase as the city schools work to form a band.
