Storm Tests Vessel as 18 Hour Gale Strikes Cape Hatteras
The schooner Anni R. Heidritter docked in Elizabeth from the West Indies with 580000 feet of lumber rode out a fierce 18 hour Cape Hatteras gale. Captain Frank K. Perkins, famed Bath skipper, described the storm as among the worst he has faced after sailing from New Foundland's Grand Banks. The voyage included loss of sails and icebound rigging, forcing a turn into the Gulf Stream to thaw and to survive. Two terrified hobos were taken aboard in Key West, adding a note of peril to the harrowing journey.
