The Maine Legislature adjourned its special session without enacting taxation or liquor control measures. The House defeated the druggists liquor bill by 74 to 50 with 23 absent, two-thirds needed for passage with the emergency clause. Other actions included extending the flexibility act to July 1 and resubmitting the prohibitory amendment to voters in September.
Three directors and 114 enumerators will be allotted Maine in taking the new census of industry business and housing which the government will put into immediate operation to provide a fair picture of conditions in the country before the administration at the earliest date possible. Speed in taking this census will be demanded and it is planned to make it a thorough job providing work for many white collar men and some women who are now out of employment.
The month has seen high fuel costs due to extreme cold and strong winds. Another cold wave is forecast to reach the region later in the week, though it may be sidetracked and New England could escape it. Time will tell.
Tolls on telegrams and postage on letters to the White House add to company receipts. Since March, 1 620 000 letters and 220 000 telegrams have arrived. Daily averages this month are 18 000 letters and 14 000 telegrams.
Several cars met with accidents Sunday and Monday as icy roads challenged drivers. Authorities report no serious injuries locally, though some drivers misjudged speed for winter conditions.
The Federal Alcohol Control Administration announced it will not interfere with liquor shipments into Maine for medicinal use. Physicians and hospitals may obtain supplies needed for patients requiring them, per the notice.

The display includes notebooks scrapbooks manuscript of her first story lectures to kindergarten teachers, unfinished sketches and travel notes with diary and travel letters to follow.
A Chrysler roadster owned by Arthur Mayo Jr. of 819 High street veered to avoid a pedestrian in heavy snow, plunging down an embankment near Freeport. Mayo, John McCarty of 993 High street, and Richard E. McElman of 60 Bedford street escaped serious injury, while a Yarmouth man named Richards was lightly struck and later cared for at home. The car hit a tree, caught fire, but by snowing extinguished, with only running-board and motor damage.
Major William R. Kimball reports increased activity in Havana. Six small bombs exploded overnight causing minor damage and alarm near the Royal Palace hotel, with one device found by a shop employee and hurled into the street. Police noted two devices in Marianao suburbs and others dropped from passing cars.
Dr C H Merchant and M S Parsons of the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station state that general property tax accounts for about three fourths of farmers taxes in Maine. They urge broadening the tax base through higher incomes and intangible property taxes, and discuss consolidating towns to improve local government efficiency.

One of Nathaniel T. Palmers best known vessels the four master William B Palmer built in 1896 was the largest schooner afloat. Critics said she was too narrow and masts too tall yet she sailed boldly and never failed a rope line until her loss after a blinding snow storm after her fifteenth birthday. A notable voyage from Baltimore to Cape Town took 3000 tons of coal in 54 days amid Boer unrest. Captain MacAloney racing against time seeking discharge faced delays, then sailed to Barbadoes to receive orders to Cuba for 3200 tons of sugar the largest cargo for a schooner at the time. A costly demurrage dispute yielded 1800 pounds from a London law firm. The Palmer proved swift and seaworthy and remained active worldwide.
A prominent taxpayer won three Havana cigars in a bet over whether the Erudition school house would be moved from its rear of the high school site. He bet a lady friend five pounds of chocolates if moved by the 20th, and she would pay him the cigars if not.
A CWA administrative office opened Thursday in Bath in the former health officer’s laboratory on the second floor of City hall. In charge are Mayor Lord W. Emery Chase Jr. and David N. Mullin. The office is to administer all CWA projects in Bath and disbursements may also be processed there.
The Brunswick Symphony Orchestra, rehearsing weekly since September, will present its first concert in Brunswick Town Hall on February 4. Conductor is Joseph Belanger. president Dr. E Preble Ackley and treasurer Susy Racine. About 50 players, with room for stringed instruments, perform Sundays at Bowdoin hotel room donated by Belanger. Proceeds largely benefit Mrs. Sarah O Cook's police department. Plans include a future fundraiser for Brunswick high school baseball.
About 60 members of Sacred Heart circle No. 551, Daughters of Isabella, attended a Christmas tree and social in Knights of Columbus hall. The event featured a choir program led by organist Miss Marion T. O Hara, a vocal solo by Miss Ruth Conley, and a sketch by Mrs. George Ingraham. Refreshments were provided by the December social committee and thanks conveyed to all helpers.
Arthur Brown of the Bath Iron Works joiner shop won the Safety Committee contest prize of 25 dollars for safety and production suggestions, plus 10 dollars for ideas accepted by the Safety council. Second prize went to Frank Lemont, with 15 dollars, and third prize was shared by George Delano and Stephen Conley. A Brunswick Snowshoe club gathering brings Lewiston Biddeford Rumford and Livermore Falls clubs to a joint event December 27 with drums, parade, and reception at the Odd Fellows hall.
Mr and Mrs Frederick W Humphreys of 896 High Street traveled to Portland on Friday afternoon to attend the funeral of Charles Cheltra a former resident of the city.

Jerry Vallades of Mount restaurant in Rockland invites 200 children to a free Christmas dinner from noon to 3 PM. To manage capacity of 30 diners at a time, children must register by Monday and will be assigned specific hours, spreading holiday cheer on a large scale.
