Maine Lobster Catch Hits 1913 High in Atlantic Waters
The Bureau of Fisheries reports Maine took 5,157,047 lobsters in 1913, part of a total Atlantic coast catch of 8,832,281. Hancock County led catches with 1,419,567 lobsters from Cumberland, while 2,792 men engaged in Maine’s lobster industry compared with 50 in New Hampshire and 65 in Massachusetts. Maine’s lobster value reached 1,525,776 of a coastwide 2,404,822. Total investment in the Maine trade was 84,487,762, covering pots vessels and related property. Commissioner Smith urges uniform state laws and a Maine lobster rearing station to preserve the supply.
