Original Records of Maine's First Farmers Society Found

Samuel Vaughan of Hallowell and Boston donated the original books of records of the Agricultural Society of Maine to the University of Maine. The society, incorporated in 1818, included future governors, justices, and notable leaders. meetings began in Hallowell June 4 1818 and a cattle show at Hallowell October 25 1820. The society faded due to dispersed members and limited funds, but it spurred agricultural education and county societies before the Civil War.
