Baxter Plans 18000 Acre Gift To Maine State Park
Ex Governor Percival Baxter announced the donation of about 18000 acres north of Mount Katahdin in Piscataquis County to the State of Maine. The land will be held in trust forever for public benefit, expanding Baxter State Park to over 24000 acres. He argues the trust should not be broken for federal control and plans to add more land when possible. The piece notes Baxter’s faith in state ownership and references a Saturday Evening Post article on a theater janitor turning a copyright into a $25000 weekly income, and comments on metropolitan ads for warm weather wear and winter sports toys.
