Navy destroys Allen launched at Bath Iron Works
The torpedo boat destroyer Allen was launched Tuesday at Bath Iron Works amid rain. Miss Dorothy Dix Allen of Greenfield Mass. officiated the first christening. Miss Harriet Allen Butler of New York delayed en route and later christened again. Officials and relatives attended as the vessel slid into the Kennebec with cheers. The Allen, a 315 foot craft, carries four 4-inch guns, torpedo tubes, oil fuel, and a crew of 103. Official trials are planned for late December, with delivery to the Navy in January.
